iPad Plein-air

Painted this on the deck of a cruise ship in Mexico on my iPad

Plein-air from life (oil)

Man love how this one came out. It's exactly what I hope to get out of a plein-air study: Good value control/design, quick effortless looking brush work that's full of life and spontaneity.

Plein air-Big Bear.

Friends of mine: the mighty Hammer familly, have a really incredible cabin out in big bear. The Hammers have been kind enough to invite us (my wife and I) there on a number of occations. Here is a painting from the dock below thier house, which overlooks Big Bear lake . I made this painting on my first trip to Big Bear and it was created with watercolor and a pallete knife on bristol paper. =)

Plein air mexico

Mini-paintings - Water Colors - The entire sheet measures about 8.5 x 5.5
Made on location in Puerto Vallarta , Mazatlan, and Orange County.

CSFU sketch

This monochromatic sketch was painted with water color and a palette knife on the Cal State Fullerton Campus. I'm very fond of this sketch. I'd like to be able to capture this much energy and simplicity in more of my paintings. It's tough not be spontaneous with a palette knife .

Tiny Sketches

For a while I was testing how small I could possibly go with my sketch book. Although this sketchbook fit comfortably in my pocket it was a bit on the cramped side.

Figure portrait in armor (oil)

I painted most of this at Studio 2nd Street in Encinitas Ca. I finished it at home from photo reference. This portrait was part of a four year period where I focused on classic foundations in: perspective, anatomy, form, color and composition. Ron Lemen ( Studio 2nd Street ) was my primary teacher during this period, but, I also trained with several others including Marshall Vandruff, Jeff Watts, Bill Perkins, and Ray Bustos.

The Bruce (charcoal)

Figure portrait in charcoal on plate bristol of my old man: Bruce Richard Lecuyer. Great guy slightly uneven nostril cavities and all. Come to think of it my nostril cavities are extremely uneven so I guess I shouldn't talk smack about my old man; especially since I know he could still kick my tail. Good thing he still doesn't use the Internet.

Anna Marie Raven (oil/digital touch ups)

This is another oil figure study I started at Studio Second street and finished at home. This one is 95% palette knife. When I was applying to grad school Last year I needed one more Illustration to add to my submission materials. After I finished the paining I made a separate painting of the x logo and the white stripe of hair with gouache and palette knife scanned them in, and added them, and the frame in Photoshop. The Idea was to turn this fine art type portrait, into an illustration of Rouge from the x men. When I met the grad committee I told them it was a portrait of Rouge that would hang on Charles Xavier's wall. The grad committee didn't really buy it as an illustration, but I did end up getting in to the program. If you zoom in you can see the name plate on the frame which reads Anna Marie Raven, Rouges (supposed) real name.

Girl with red bracelet (oil)

This is another palette knife painting done in oil from life. Making an attempt to paint the figure in a more impressionist style.

Stewart bros (mixed media)

This painting started out as a triptych of three brothers. Oatmeal, Ben, and Jim Stewart painted as their projected persona's. I combined the triptych which started out as pencil and water color on cheap thin Bristol paper. Later I glued some printed elements involving their family crest and shellacked the whole thing with clear and white acrylic paint. Finally I finished it with oils. Its was a weird process and the resulting painting makes for a rather odd composition. Still I have a deep love and respect for this family so the painting's is still pretty meaningful to me.

Female Study (oil)

Here's another figurative oil study. I think I had about two, 2 or 3 hours sessions with the model on this one. I was attempting to stylize and elongate her form as much as I could get away with in a realistic study like this. I really like some of the color harmonies going on in this painting.

Plein air/ SD/ sketch 4.25"x5.5" (water color)

Outdoor painting in downtown San Diego.

Plein air/Disneyland 2"x3" (water color)

I actually had Peter Pan approach me while I was painting the Disney castle here. I asked him if he could fly up there and pose for me, but he jumped back through his hands to his hips and mischievously sang "There's no way I can stand still for that long!" Then he leaped away out of site stage right. Man Grow up already!

Plein air Disneyland/Santa Ana/Downtown Disney 4.25"x5.5" (mixed media)

Clockwise: New Orleans district Disneyland,Santa Ana train station, and Mesoamerican inspired architecture of the rainforest cafe in Downtown Disney. If you can't get down to the real ruins in central America (like me) the RFC is a great free alternative.
